Chesapeake Bay Retrievers - History

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were first registered with the National American Kennel Club in 1878. The American Kennel Club was founded in 1884 and was open to Chesapeake's from the beginning. The first standard was written in 1890. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was developed from two Newfoundland pups rescued, in 1807, from a sinking ship. The vessel was bound for England where the carefully selected pups were to be sold. The pups were purchased by one of the rescuers and wound up on opposite sides of the Chesapeake Bay. These two developed into excellent water dogs and were bred to other types of hunting dogs in the Chesapeake Bay area.

Many Chesapeake's live harmoniously in multi-dog, multi-animal families. As with all dogs, adult male and females must be supervised around children and strange dogs.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers - Hunting

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was originally bred for retrieving ducks from the bay.

A large majority of Chessies is termed as "wild fowling dogs" and is used only for ducks and geese, although they are equally at home working on upland game on driven shoots. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers occasionally compete in gundog working tests with the other retriever breeds, and within the Chesapeake Club where they are tested on canvas dummies or cold (dead) game.
