Chesapeake Bay Retriever Puppies

The history of the breed began with two puppies saved from a shipwreck in 1807, but those were not actually Chesapeake Bay Retriever Puppies but two Newfoundland puppies. In the aftermath, the whole breeding process took place near Chesapeake Bay – a region in North America with adverse climatic conditions and large population of birds, which this dog was supposed to hunt. Those two puppies – a male and a female – were named “Sailor” and “Canton” correspondingly.

As those would-be Chesapeake Bay Retriever Puppies grew up, they demonstrated a striking sagacity in hunting and a stunning knack for retrieving. The texture of their coat permitted the dog to withstand the harsh weather conditions of the region, and their coat color made them barely visible in local terrains. All this made them irreplaceable hunting companions. This came to be the first retriever breed to be registered by the American Kennel Club. The breed received an official recognition in 1878.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever of today is a medium-sized dog, measuring 12-15 inches high at the shoulder. The dog has a graceful yet sturdy body build, his hind legs being slightly longer than the front legs. The dog’s coat is actually waterproof, featuring a dense undercoat. It is wavy on the neck, shoulders, back and loins. The coat comes in different shades of brown, both light and dark, as well as sedge, and deadgrass. The standard also admits some white on the belly and chest. These dogs have broad and strong chests, as they have been known to break ice when diving. Needless to say, they are excellent swimmers and can spend a long time in cold water. These dogs have small and hanging ears and very clear and intelligent eyes. Chesapeake Bay Retriever Puppies are very cute and active.

These dogs are very quick learners, and they are famous for their people-oriented disposition. However, they are more dominant and willful than most other retrievers. For this reason, they require thorough socialization and positive training. They can be hard to train for inexperienced owners. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers can be reserved with strangers and dog-aggressive. They are quite territorial and very protective around their loved ones. Because training Chesapeake Bay Retriever Puppies is a little challenging, breeders do not usually recommend this breed for young dog owners.
