Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are strong, well balanced, and powerfully built animals. These are medium-sized dogs. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever's chest is wide and deep. The body and legs are of medium length. Some of the most distinctive features include: clear eyes that are amber or yellowish in color, a double coat slightly waving on only shoulders, back, neck and loins, and hindquarters that tend to be a little higher than the shoulders of the dog. The coat is water-repellant. It is straight and short. Possible coat colors include brown, tan and "deadgrass."
Chesapeake Bay Retrievers make good waterfowl hunters due to their extraordinary swimming abilities. These dogs can carry birds in conditions of rough water or strong tides.
Height: Males should measure 23 to 26 inches, females-21to 24 inches. Oversized or undersized Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are penalized.
Weight: Male dogs weigh 65 to 80 pounds and females- 55 to 70 pounds.
Life Span: 10-13 years

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever ought to display bright and cheerful disposition and should have an intelligent expression. The most desirable features in Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are alertness, willingness to work, love of water, intelligence and friendly nature. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are a protective breed and they tend to make very good watchdogs. Courageous and loyal, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers make wonderful family pets.
